Instructional videos are a valuable component of your library’s instructional program, extending your reach and supporting patrons during teachable moments throughout the research process. However, the thought of creating instructional videos can be intimidating. Are we using effective design practices that support learning? Is the final product going to be accessible? Will our students want to watch the videos we create?


This workshop will introduce a straightforward process for planning, recording, and editing instructional videos that are engaging and effective learning resources. In addition to a design process, the workshop will address evidence-based principles for multimedia learning, selecting affordable software and tools, and applying design practices that support accessibility. Among other resources, participants will leave with a list of recommended software and a checklist of accessibility practices and standards for future use.


We will have opportunities for hands-on activities and collaboration throughout. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop for some hands-on work, but this is not required.

Typically, pre-conference workshops have anywhere from 10-25 attendees. As such, they are able to have a significant amount of interactivity. 

Outcomes

Following the workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • use evidence-based principles of multimedia learning to design instructional videos
  • use an accessibility-centered approach to design instructional videos.
  • identify and follow standards for video captions and transcripts
  • evaluate instructional videos for adherence to design and accessibility standards.
