Actually yes, as the principles behind these and other improv games can improve immensely the teaching life of a librarian. Instruction librarians must create and foster interactive and engaging learning environments, so they must be prepared to respond to unforeseen needs and teachable moments as they arise. Good teaching is an art that calls for creative approaches - by learning and building on skills associated with creativity, librarians can improve their teaching. Skilled teachers readily improvise in the classroom, increasing their flexibility, responsiveness, and effectiveness. Contrary to some misconceptions, improvisation is not only a strategy to fall back on when planned strategies fail. Improvisation is valuable part of teaching that enhances the classroom experience for teachers and students alike. Librarians can enhance creativity in teaching and learning by planning for and purposefully incorporating improvisation in the classroom. The purpose of this workshop is to help participants enhance creativity in their teaching by learning and applying the skills of improvisation. During this workshop, participants will:
- Learn fundamental improvisation skills
- Work together to develop improvisational approaches
- Apply specific improvisational skills to their own instructional activities
- Practice planning and structuring their classroom sessions and activities for improvisation and creativity
Participants are asked to come with lesson plans or descriptions of lessons and activities they use, so they may re-envision and recreate them incorporating an improvisational perspective and related techniques.
Learning Outcomes:
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify the basic principles of improvisation
- Demonstrate basic improvisation skills
- Create a lesson plan, utilizing improvisational techniques
- Modify an existing activity or lesson plan, incorporating improvisational techniques
