Academic librarians are no strangers to assessment, but figuring out how to implement authentic assessment can be tricky. When you design your instruction with assessment in mind, you will not only be able to effectively measure student learning, but also collect and deliver data that demonstrates library support of student learning.
This workshop will discuss the importance of designing authentic learning activities tied to information literacy learning outcomes. Participants will critically evaluate and explore a number of instructional technologies that provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate learning while applying higher-order skills such as critical thinking, synthesis, and analysis of information.
Participants are encouraged to come to the workshop with a lesson or activity that you teach regularly for which you would like to incorporate an assessment component. Participants will work individually or in groups to write measurable learning outcomes, determine authentic learning tasks, and identify an appropriate instructional technology tool(s) for assessment of the learning outcomes.
Participants are also encouraged to bring a laptop or mobile device for the chance to analyze the instructional technologies discussed. This interactive workshop will share successful and easy to implement authentic assessment techniques and tools that will have students showing off their skills in no time.

Participants will:
- describe the characteristics of authentic assessment in order to successfully measure students' information literacy skills
- compare and contrast instructional technologies in order to determine their usefulness for measuring student learning
- develop strategies for engaging students in order to maximize participation levels in library instruction sessions
