Perspectives Beyond the Library:
A Teacher’s Method for Advancing Information Literacy Programs and Initiatives

This three-hour, highly interactive, activity-based workshop, conducted by Ferris State professor Dr. Caroline Stern, will focus on the methods of a veteran composition teacher and instructional design expert. The workshop will outline how librarians and library administrators, with or without an established information literacy (IL) program, can use education and adult learning theory to create practical blueprints for advancing and maximizing IL programs and initiatives. We’ll exam how IL is an important and easy-to-use footing for institutional and individual assessment and look at basic and advanced easy-to-access resources and tools for IL instruction and assessment.
Teaching institutions requiring accreditation or a valid and reliable measurement of their fiscal or social value can use IL skills as a key indicator of the relevance and importance of librarians, libraries, and IL instruction. We will review and discuss Quality Enhancement Programs and other “real world” models of IL instruction and assessment that demonstrate that IL is a lifelong learning skill.
The workshop will examine practical ways librarians can advance and maximize instruction beyond the teacher-centered model to a focus on active learning by the student. Further, we will explore how IL programs and the skills learned from instruction can be the framework for curriculum rather than just a separate structure. Research and practice both show that IL is best taught in context and not as a separate skill. IL teaching and learning activities can be integrated into existing curricula to create bridges and collaborations between classroom faculty and librarians that are as dynamic as the information age. Distributing IL across the curricula is one way to persuade teachers and administrators that the critical thinking that IL requires is a core foundation of a 21st century education.
Participants will be encouraged to network and share their best practices while discussing their own successes, obstacles, and strategies for advancing information literacy awareness and instruction at their own institutions.
